A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, raising questions about potential gains made from non-public details of the event.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Trading information shows that traders put the odds of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet the odds had jumped to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the early hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity just before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on non-public details," stated an industry expert.

A small number of other platform users also earned tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Emerges

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A bill introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in recent years, with users able to predict everything from sports to politics.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
